At 11:47 on a Thursday morning in February, I destroyed the most exclusive dinner party in South Florida with three hundred and twelve words.

Seven sentences. I know the count because I wrote them fourteen times across four months, and by the final version I had cut everything that wasn't essential, and what remained was three hundred and twelve words I knew I could never take back.

I hit send anyway.

I am sitting in my car in the Banyans Club parking lot with the engine off. Through the windshield I can see the path to the north entrance — the one the members use, the one I have used every day for two years and seven months. I know the exact number because I counted from the day we closed on the house — August 14th, 2017 — which was the day I believed I had finally arrived somewhere worth arriving.

I know now that arriving was never going to be enough for me.

That is not a comfortable thing to know about yourself. I know it anyway.
